Gadgets are small specialized applications that are designed to do simple tasks, such as clocks, calendars, RSS notifiers or search tools. They can run on the desktop and on the Windows Sidebar.
The Sidebar is a widget engine for Gadgets, mini-applications which can be used to simultaneously display different information such as the system time, Internet-powered features such as RSS feeds, and to control external applications such as Windows Media Player.

On the Macintosh, widgets are mini-applications written in JavaScript that are launched from the Mac Dashboard or desktop. Just like Gadgets, they can be clocks, calendars, recipe viewers and much more

Desktop apps are applications that are installed on your computer, similar to Microsoft Word. They don't run in the sidebar like Gadgets or in the Dashboard like Widgets. These applications are known as BDA's or Branded Desktop Applications. These applications along with Widgets and Gadgets are a great way to keep a company brand in front of the consumer.
